What were your thoughts on the fight?

It went much as I expected... anything can happen in a fight, but I was calm and ready for anything.

How does your training differ for MMA?

Well... I train Jiu-Jitsu twice a day and conditioning once a day as it is, but the focus changes considerably during competition training, focusing on the rule set you will be competing under.

Technically, the focus changes to controlling and understanding the distance, footwork and entries.

Physically, everything must become more explosive and athletic all round to make up for the technical restrictions of short rounds, being stood up, etc

Nutritionally, I keep the same unprocessed, real food diet as always, but increase the alkaline and protein for recovery. I supplement hemp protein, by far the best protein for athletes as it is alkaline not acidic , bio available and a real food.
We get ours from http://www.hempfoods.com.au/

Why fight?

I see competition as a test to just "be"... to stay calm and centered under duress.

The next bonus is skill development... particularly post event as you reflect and I go back to juggling the paradox between being satisfied in the moment and continually improving.

Anything else?

Thank you to Luke Hume for the opportunity to cross arms, Daniel Sainty for everything, and Kaan Zaman... watch out for his name!

Nutrition plays a huge role in Jiu-Jitsu, from the motivation to train, staying focussed once there and in your recovery for the next session!

Information flies around everywhere, Raw vegan, Paleo, to the food pyramid dieticians would have us try and follow. Unfortunately the health seeking scene is even more political than Jiu-Jitsu...

There are, of course some basic pointers such as avoiding processed foods and excess glutinous grains, buying vegetables from farmers markets / community food co-ops, if consuming animal products avoiding factory farmed, balance your acid and alkaline...

But where to start? The most common pitfall for beginning athletes is NOT getting enough calories!
